LEARNING NEW SKILLS is not something we should have
to plan and book in, it should be a mindset we are open to
all the time. When we are open minded we can find lessons
in things we’d typically not see. When we become locked
into a routine it’s easy to forget the importance of topping
up our creative brain and catching a glimpse of our true self
in the mirror.
I was reminded of this even more so when I interviewed
Vivienne Mackinder recently. After 43 years in the industry,
one of the most common questions she is asked is ‘how do you stay motivated 40 years
later?’ The short answer comes down to a continually open mindset to learn from others.
Vivienne worked at Sassoon’s in the 80s before going for an interview with Trevor Sorbie.
He asked her if she called herself a hairdresser. She said ‘Yes’, to which he replied, ‘No,
you’re not a hairdresser you’re a hair cutter. All of these haircuts are the same’. This is when
she realised that styling and being artistic with hair is what she really had to learn and her
mind has been open ever since. Vivienne has achieved remarkable things and add to this
the fact she looks incredible on stage – leaping with energy and looking half her age, she
attributes staying young and successful down to the mindset of being young, willing and
open to new ideas. Most importantly down to learning from others. Did I tell you she’s all of
a sudden learning to be a colourist?
Vivienne conducted a session at the Joico Global Destination Event titled ‘unlocking
your creativity’. “The mind is like a muscle and the more you flex it the stronger it becomes.
There are a lot of myths around creativity, like you have to be born with it or you have to be
right brain. But this is all nonsense,” Vivienne said.
“Every generation has something beautiful to give. Every year there are so many people
that gain a great deal of pleasure from sharing ideas, creativity, techniques and inspiration
for others to benefit from.”
Yet again, this is the objective of this annual education mini mag and this year we’ve
added an online calendar platform where you can check up-to-the-minute dates and
classes online via www.styleicons.com.au.
We really have no excuses when being busy is a means to an end – it’s not the cause that’s
going to get us where we want to be. So in a nod to the cool culture and eclectic musings of
those that take the time to teach, take note now and tap into the incredible knowledge we
have available from such a unique global collective of inspiring souls. We mustn’t ever take
this for granted considering many professions stare down the barrel of a work week alone
and motivated only by themselves.
As Vivienne reminded me - there are two types of pain. The pain of discipline and the
pain of regret.
I’ll leave it to you to decide which one hurts more.
