An England native Charles launched his hair and beauty career
more than 30 years ago under the legendary Vidal Sassoon. Later
moving onto the Bruce of Crescendo hair salon in Toronto -- where
he worked as a top stylist and manager. In 1987 he used these
invaluable early experiences to open four successful salons of his
own back home in Manchester, England.
However, success in his early career was by no means assured.
As a child and young man he lived with a severe stuttering
disability, and often went for long periods without speaking at all,
for fear of bullying and rejection.
For 25 years he dreamed of one day speaking fluently in
public; ironically, nowadays he uses this experience to inform
his public speaking.
"I grew up with a really bad stutter - I use this sometimes as
the introduction to my presentation. It shocks and surprises my
audience to learn this. It also inspires them as I use it to show
the importance of being able to face your fears, overcome your
challenges and adversities and make ones dreams come true."
In 1992 he took his career in a different direction, moving into
the sales and service side of the industry, and over the years
represented several international companies. In one particularly
fruitful 18-month period, he increased sales in his territory by
346 per cent and opened 242 new accounts.
As his personal success grew, Charles again shifted his focus
to professional speaking, starting his own business that provides
customized business building, leadership, customer service,
marketing and motivational presentations and workshops both
within and beyond the salon industry. He was recently ranked as
one of the top 60 motivational speakers in the world, an achievement
he is rightly proud of.
"[It] was unexpected and huge to be included in that list of the
very best of my speaking peers, people like Tony Robbins... But the
best was when my kids awarded me "Best Dad In e World and
Rock Star Award" a few years ago!"
His presentation and seminars have taken him around the
world, beyond the UK and North America where he cut his teeth
-- an opportunity and privilege he particularly values.
"I have also had the opportunity over the last few years to
travel and speak in some exceptional places, like Iran, Cuba,
Mexico, Sweden, China, Norway, Denmark, Turkey, South
Africa, India, Colombia, New Zealand, Poland and Bulgaria.
Being exposed to such different cultures has been exceptionally
enlightening. In each, I try to find something distinctive to
that country to weave into my presentations and help connect
In 2004, Charles' best-selling book Success Is Not A Spectator
Sport: How to Take Action and Achieve More was published. For
him, the title of this book contains his core business philosophy
of hard work and self-motivation.
"You have to go after whatever you want in life, luck has nothing
to do with it. You can't wait for success to come to you, you have
to go after it. Hard work, desire, belief, a thick skin, a sense of
humour; you can't rest on your laurels. Do not make excuses. You
are responsible for whatever it is you want to achieve in life."
Despite his success as an author and on the wider motivational
speaking circuit, Charles still credits the hair industry as the place
where he found his true voice, and he feels a special connection
with it as a result.
"I speak about 50 per cent of my time in the salon and beauty
industry globally. If I were not working in it, I would miss the
people and buzz: it's as simple as that. ere is a bond with
people from the hair industry that is exciting- these audiences
