Home' INSTYLE Magazine : INSTYLE JULAUG 2015 Contents SMITH STREET COLLINGWOOD is a parody of conservatism
and a take off of 'me-too' -- smattered with highly
individualized establishments, Eureka Rebellion Trading is
one of those places you'd could be forgiven for completely
losing track of time. Go in for a haircut and come out with
so much more.
After almost a decade in North America, Anthony
Allaymias returned with a vision of a strip-mall housing
all his favourite things -- tattoos, barbershops, hot sauce
(yes the spicy stuff) and heavy-metal vinyl. So he set out
to create what almost presents like a two-level arcade of
good times for the real men.
w When did you launch Eureka Rebellion Trading?
Can you give us a bit of history of how the store
Eureka Rebellion Trading opened its doors in February
2013 but the concept had been a dream of mine for many
years. ERT was originally inspired by early 20th century
businesses where tattoo studios and barber shops shared
store fronts. e idea of combining different creative
elements into the one business really appealed to me and
it was something that was becoming popular in North
America (where I had previously lived for nine years).
When it was time to put together the plans for opening
the tattoo/barber shop, I had decided that if the business
had become successful I would open a second business;
a small record store down the road where I could spin
awesome tunes and converse with customers about music
all day. As we were looking for suitable locations, my
partner and I came across an industrial warehouse on
Smith Street and that's when I decided that instead of
waiting to be able to afford a second lease, I could just have
all three businesses in the one store.
w What made you choose Collingwood for the location?
e neighborhood was an obvious choice for us as
the Collingwood/Fitzroy area is known throughout
Melbourne as being a central place for creativity. With
many restaurants, bars, boutique and unique independent
stores, we knew that the locals would embrace our
concept with open arms and the neighboring businesses
would complement us well.
w What inspired the fit out?
Eureka Rebellion Trading itself was named after the
Eureka Rebellion of 1854. In a town that celebrates
American cuisine and culture, we wanted to show people
that Australia's own traditions and culture can be just as
cool. In regards to the fitout, we tried to spark a reflection
of traditional Australian heritage by selecting recycled
wood and vintage furnishings.
Combining the art of tattoo, the
precision of a barber and the soul
of music, there is nothing ordinary
about Eureka Rebellion Trading.
w What sets Eureka Rebellion Trading apart from the rest?
e combination of the three businesses under the one roof
is something that we do differently from others, but it's
also not an aspect that we rest on.
I feel that to get ahead in any business it's important
to keep in touch with both local and overseas trends
and use that information to think outside the box. For
example, barbering and men's grooming in Australia has
seen a massive resurgence in the last two years which
is very positive for the industry. However, I do feel that
some of the new businesses popping up are sticking to a
certain formula instead of taking in what they see and re-
inventing the concept as their own. At times I worry this
could see the barbering industry becoming something less
sustainable and more of a fad, which is why my partner
and I are always trying to come up with new ideas to
constantly evolve our store.
Another thing that separates us is the work we put behind
organizing events for our customers such as in-store music
signings and live shows. rough these events we have
been lucky enough to host a pop-up tattoo and barber shop
backstage at Soundwave Festival for the last two years.
w Any exclusives on this new web store/website we can
look forward to?
After six months of hard work I can finally say that the
Eureka Rebellion Trading website will be launching
this month. e website will feature a curated blog with
upcoming events, album reviews and video hair tutorials.
Our web-store will have our entire record collection
online plus a new range of ERT merchandise.
We also have a few collaborations in the works with some
of our past notable guests/clients.
w Can you tell us a little more about your clientele?
I feel that we're quite lucky in that we have such a diverse
range of customers. We have some awesome barber shop
regulars (both guys and girls) and our tattoo clients
feel more like friends as they can require many hours
and sessions in the chair. Customers who visit us for
the records range from all ages and sometimes buy
albums that you would never expect. We also have many
interstate clients who have heard about the store and want
to check it out when they're in Melbourne.
In addition to this demographic we have also had many
notable clients come through the store ranging from
international bands such as Mastodon, to athletes from
Collingwood Football Club and celebrities like Miley Cyrus.
